A bit about the Teaching Biology Project
The Teaching Biology Project, part of the Africa Genome Education Institute, will be running three cconferences for pre-service and in-service Life Science teachers per year from 2009 to 2012. Each conference is limited to 50 teachers. These conferences run over four days in each of the March, June and September school holidays. We also run practical days where teachers can learn how to conduct practicals in their classes. In addition to the resources available on this website to teachers who have attended a TBP conference we are also developing hard copy resources suitable for the new 2011 Gr 12 curriculum.
The aim of the conferences is to improve teachers’ knowledge of evolutionary biology, to allow them to network with teachers from a range of schools, develop resource materials in collaboration with other teachers and to conduct practical assessment tasks that they can do in their own classrooms. We would like teachers to develop their ICT (information computer technology) skills, thus delegates will have access to computer laboratories and assistance and be required to put together lesson plans and assessment tasks using ICT.
The Teaching Biology Project is run by two experienced teachers who both currently teach Life Science in Cape Town. Cheryl Douglas is the programme manager and Nontobeko Mjali is the schools liaison officer. A special feature of the conferences is that all delegates are placed into small groups that are facilitated by experienced teachers.
